Step by Step Process

Dmitriy Pavlov is an unmatched artist, who has mastered his own technique of hand piercing and engraving in 30 years of goldsmith craft and jewelry design. Dmitriy takes every step of the process of creation on his own, and he even uses custom self-designed tools and techniques for several of the steps. In the end, we always see a work fascinating in form and flawless in execution. Learn more about how Dmitriy Pavlov creates his beautiful engagement rings.

Step 1: Strip Drilling. The first step of engraving is the metal strip drilling. The metal strip, with pre-drawn design pattern, is pierced with the finest drills with diameter of 0.3-0.5 mm. Often, the space between the scrolls is so small, that the hole actually touches the scrolls. This process outlines the design of the ring.

Step 2: Strip Piercing. The finest saw blades 0.18-0.21 mm are used for piercing. This step is commonly done under a microscope to ensure utmost precision. After piercing the metal strip, the inner side of each hole is polished and burnished with the dull back side of the saw blade.

Step 3: Strip Bending. The metal strip with pierced scrolls is bent to form a closed ring. In order to preserve the fine and fragile scrolls from tearing apart, a lead block, mandrel, and a rawhide mallet are used for accurate shaping.

Step 4: Ring Soldering. After bending and shaping, the ring is soldered. Only hard solders are used in this process for obtaining the maximal strength of the joint. Now the blank is ready for engraving.

Step 5: Ring Engraving. A microscope and special profile gravers are used for engraving. Each scroll is engraved to its greatest possible depth, some scrolls are 1.3 mm deep! By the end of this process, the surface of each scroll looks like a smooth concave mirror.

Step 6: Ring Polishing. Only a light polishing is required now in order to have the whole ring sparkle as one diamond cut gem, visually blurring the borders between the metal and the actual gem, and creating an effect of one large diamond. The polishing is done by the finest polishing compound which helps to boost the natural shine of the metal.

Step 7: Minor Gems Setting. The minor gems 1-2.5 mm are usually set in carved bezels, rather than soldered-in. This prevents creation of pronged bumps on the exterior and lateral parts of the ring, and makes the ring comfortable for every day wear.

Step 8: Prong Head Soldering. The prong head is soldered on top of the ring. This is the only element that is not a part of the original metal strip. The purpose of the prong head is to hold a large central diamond, and make it look even bigger than it is.

Step 9: Main Gem Setting. The setting of the main gemstone, a large 0.6-ct white diamond in this particular ring, is usually the last step of the ring creation. After the final polish and finish, the ring is completed.
