A diamond setter arranges and fastens precious stones to pieces of jewelry. The skill level of a setter determines his ability to work with different corundum, various cuts and shapes, and different types of settings. A highly qualified diamond setter is proficient using all setting types and precious stones of all kinds, shapes, and cuts. Other setters may work with just a few, common shapes of corundum and use only a limited number of settings and casts. Regardless, setters must find an appropriate mounting which fixes a stone firmly and securely while also facilitating its aesthetic advantages. Highly skilled gem setters work with ivory insets and other valuable materials. They also use blackened, filigree, and enamel settings. You can learn more about mounting types in the Gem Settings article.
